The Fine Art of Bamboozle Detection by Carl Sagan

One of the saddest lessons of history is this:
If we've been bamboozled long enough,
we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle.
We're no longer interested in finding out the truth.
The bamboozle has captured us.
It is simply too painful to acknowledge
-- even to ourselves --
that we've been so credulous.[gullible]
(So the old bamboozles tend to persist
as the new bamboozles rise.)

-- Carl Sagan, "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection," Parade, February 1, 1987

Finding the occasional straw of truth awash
in a great ocean of confusion and bamboozle
requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage.
But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought,
we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us
-- and we risk becoming a nation of suckers,
up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along.

-- Carl Sagan, "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection," Parade, February 1, 1987

At the heart of science is an essential tension
between two seemingly contradictory attitudes
-- an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counter intuitive they may be,
and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new.
This is how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense.
Of course, scientists make mistakes
in trying to understand the world,
but there is a built-in error-correcting mechanism:
The collective enterprise of creative thinking
and skeptical thinking together keeps the field on track.

BAMBOOZLE HAS REPUBLICANS IN ITS GRASP

Middle class Republicans are out in the cold.
The art of bamboozle has them in its hold.
The Republican middle class is not capable of thinking.
They refuse to believe that their middle class is shrinking.

Their thinking is faulty they can't think clearly.
They betray democracy which so many paid for dearly.
Middle class Republicans are the nation's greatest suckers.
Confused and dispossessed they ignore Democratic benefactors.

All republican right-wing-nuts are not completely crazy.
They are the leaders that prey on the intellectually lazy.
Some people can be fooled all of the time.
The art of bamboozle keeps the uninformed in line.

IN 2014 “THE PARTY OF NO” NEEDS COMPLETE REPLACING

The Republican “Party of No” in 2014 must be rejected.
Progressive Senators and Representatives must be elected.
In the Senate remove the “Party of No” obstructionist batch.
Democratic "Blue Dog" turncoats are not very hard to catch.

It's jobs and more jobs that America needs.
Reject cutting jobs while America bleeds.
FDR knew what to do.
The “Party of No” hasn't a clue.

We the People are  sorely neglected.
To the rich few the GOP has defected.
Social safety nets are under attack.
Lower taxes for the few are on the fast track.

In November 2014 voting only for the Progressive best.
We can clean out the Congress corrupted nest.
We know who they are, and won't forget what they've done.
With strong turnout, voting wisely; a new government is won.

VOTE IN 2014 FOR PROGRESSIVE REPRESENTATION

Reject Congressional enablers of greed and corruption.
We the People must vote in 2014 for our representation.
We know who they are, we know how they voted.
Their  war on the middle class is fullly noted.

The Republican Party is working to take democracy away.
Vote in 2014 to insure democracy in America is here to stay.
American democracy of our fathers must again be won.
Vote Progressive in 2014 or democracy soon will be gone.

MORE REASONS TO BECOME A PROGRESSIVE

Government forced probes of vaginas.
Misogynists target women with vendettas.

Pro-birth anti-abortionists neglect poorly fed children.
Poorly educated children are an egregious American sin.

Revolving door enriches the few.
Congress can find nothing to do.

Plutocratic ideologues dictate government policy.
Congressmen swear to support disproven ideology.

Availability of guns caused the slaughter of the innocents.
NRA  proposes more guns in schools to provide protections.

Banks that are too big to fail are too big to exist.
To uphold justice by trial financial regulators desist.

Planet destroying tar sands strip mine in Alberta, Canada.
Profits for the few screwing the people of North America.

WHY I BECAME A PROGRESSIVE

The Ayn Rand's accepted promotion of greed.
Effectively denounces democracy’s creed.

Politicians and judges enable voter suppression.
We the People cheated out of representation.

Congress orders the Post Office to go bankrupt.
It’s now a plum for Congress’ friends to pick up.

Corporations globalized to maximize tax evasion.
Shipping jobs overseas caused USA desolation.

Corporate welfare drains the treasury’s coffers.
The well-heeled few provided with profit sources.

Social Security and Medicare slowly dissipated.
The middle class standard of living emaciated.

Weaken Social Security until it’s ripe for privatizing
Then drain the fund by slick trick profitizing.

Privatize Medicare in order to save it.
Provide the few with a source of profit.

Privatize schools to control what students learn.
Education is another source of profits to earn.

The Heist of the USA

The cup of the few filled to overflowing.
Greed driven largess, steadily growing.
The Peoples’ cup loses steady streams.
The few snatch democracy’s dreams.
